What Good Is Poetry?

Matt McDonald
What Good Is Poetry?

What good is poetry?
besides a bunch of flowery words
mixed together
attempting to make meaning
from the meaningless
… says my adult mind
chewed on by the doubt
of the decades

What good is poetry?
it hardly ever pays the bills,
except for the patient few
willing to persist in poverty
for years,
perhaps more or less

Who are our poets?
except a waste
of economic space
… GDP unrealized

What good is poetry?
besides instant entry
into the hard to reach
playful world
within the easy to reach
serious world

What good is poetry?
besides paying the mental health bills
by ignoring the teacher’s words to
SLOW DOWN
by ignoring the recess bell
calling you back inside

Who are our poets?
if they’re not GNH
Gross National Happiness
realized

Who are our poets?
everyone,
everywhere
who decides to let themselves
see it.
